If you have attended a job interview recently you probably know why preparing for the job interview is very important. You also probably regret not having done enough research on the company or the fact that you arrived late for the interview and showed up with the wrong documents or no documents at all.

Here are simple 6 interview rules you must know

1. Do your research

Researching a company so as to familiarize with their services, products, customers and competitors is a must. This helps you when answering question as you are able to relate them to the company’s core business.

Ms. Mwendwa says that the more you know about the company the better chance you have of selling yourself in the interview.

2. Look sharp

Select what to wear a day prior to the interview. Make sure you attire is well ironed out and that it fits well.
Avoid shouting colors and ladies stay away from clothing with very big distracting flowers.

Remember, if you feel good, others will respond to you in the same manner.

3. Be on time

Muthoni Ndegwa, a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing Services says that, getting late for an interview portrays you as a candidate who was never really serious on attending the interview which obviously makes the interviewer not take you seriously.

When invited for an interview, purpose to leave your house early incase you are caught on traffic or you get lost.” Advises Muthoni

4. Answer the questions asked

Listening to your interviewer and getting to understand the question you are asked is very important. Also specifically answer the question you are asked, do not try to dodge a question because you don’t have an answer.

Ms. Mwendwa says that if you do not get what the interviewer is asking you can politely ask him/her to rephrase the question.

On the same note, give specific examples that highlight your successes and uniqueness when answering the question as this gives you an edge over other job seekers.

5. Ask questions

Remember that asking questions sheds light on what kind of company you will probably be working with or the culture of the company. Also the questions you ask indicate your interest in the company or the job.

6. Follow up

Doing a follow up on your interview whether through an email or a call gives you a chance to remind the interviewer about you. Do not stalk the interviewer though, if they ask to call you on a later date wait until they call you.
