Ghana Police men’s Hockey club players were attacked by thugs next to their hotel in an incident that left Kenyan Linus Sang and one foreign player with serious injuries.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 12- A heroic hockey player was last night left with a deep cut on his head in his successful attempt to thwart a robbery incident on Ghanaian players currently taking part in the ongoing Africa Nations Club Cup championship in Nairobi.

Ghana Police men’s Hockey club players were attacked by thugs next to their hotel in an incident that left Kenyan Linus Sang and  one foreign player with serious injuries.

Sang, the  National team and United States International University – Africa (USIU-A) goalkeeper, was with the foreign team during the ugly incident that left him nursing almost a 15cm-long cut at the lower back of his head in the 8.00pm incident after he jumped in to diffuse the situation after unknown men attacked the team.

The number of the attackers was not immediately established.

The player took to social media to announce his heroic act that kept the attackers at bay but left him with exposed flesh that missed his throat by an inch.

“Just now while protecting Ghana police from…” he wrote on his social media page accompanied with the graphic photograph of his wound.

It was not immediately established whether the cut was as a result of a knife or a machete.

Fortunately,  the cut, which covered a big part of the cervical did not touch his occipital but was just a few centimeters from his throat. He was rushed to Coptic Mission hospital for medical attention where he was treated and later discharged.

“Looking better now,”  he said after from his hospital bed adding that, “At least I saved Ghanaian player from death.”

“Right now we could have been talking about something else. I took it for the Ghana hockey police team although one of their player got injured. Wishing him quick recovery too.”

The incident brings to question the security plans put in place by host Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) to protect the participants of the continental games.

“Tournament directors must not only focus on the pitch. Where is the security of the people that promote the game. We are even scared to go out. The guy tried to protect us (Ghanaians) and look at what happened to him,” observed a Ghanaian player, Joseph Appiah.

Appiah added: “All participating teams henceforth must ensure full security on the field and off the field before commencement of any tournament.”

Tournament director Andrew Imuesemhe could not be reached for comment.

This is not the first insecurity incident being reported in the ongoing games which will climax this week.

Early in the week, one of the delegates from Egypt lost his bag with personal effects at the VIP section of the City Park stadium; a reserved place for the very important guests and KHU officials only.

The incident  left KHU with egg on the face after some section of the fans took to social media to mock the ‘VIP thieves’.

Ghana Police are through to the semi final.
