Journalists at Radio Africa Group (the fourth largest media firm in Kenya) are facing acute starvation after the news firm’s heads meet this morning to sign away many to joblessness.
Radio Africa Group owns the Star newspaper, Kiss TV, and a number of radio stations including the “sex-in-the-morning” Classic 105 as well as Kiss FM, Radio Jambo, X-FM and East FM.
As I write this, top management led by Patrick Quarcoo, the Ghanaian co-owner of the firm, as well as senior editors are in a closed door meeting to decide who exits and who remains at Lions Place.
Others in the meeting are Managing Editor William Pike, Chief Operations Officer Agnes Kalekye, Chief Editor Charles Kerich and Political Editor Paul Illado.
The Star Newspaper, the only print for the firm, is increasingly becoming a Jubilee regime propaganda spreadsheet as 2017 elections nears. The downside of this has seen a fall in readership of both the online and print editions.
The paper was recently accused of cooking opinion polls favorable to the ruling party in collusion with pollster Ipsos Synovate, charges which it vehemently denies.
Classic 105, the top listened to radio station of the firm has also increasingly turned into a “live-porn”, with producers Maina and King’ang’i becoming the public face of moral rot in Kenya’s radio industry.
Despite these ploys, Radio Africa Group joins a number of media firms and companies laying off workers as Kenyan economy hits rock bottom growth.
Sources within the media firm have told Kenya Today a number of political reporters seen as ‘sympathetic’ to the opposition will be the main casualties of the purge, whose first victims will be known later today.
