CITY GIRL: Nairobians are tired of Sonkoism; they don’t need it

Senator Mike Mbuvi Sonko is exactly the kind of leader that Nairobi does not need.

He is a rude, abusive and narcissistic man with neither self-esteem nor respect for all of the 800,000-plus constituents who voted for him in 2103.

Back then, they probably thought that he had something between his ears. Turns out that he is just as superficial as the gold chains he wears around his neck and his promises are as plastic as the sneakers on his feet.

He is also a tad too over-confident for such an under-educated man with questionable credentials. He also comes across as intoxicated by his sense of invincibility, an intellectual midget and a highly egotistical man incapable of handling disappointment from his party. Did I say he appears to have trouble keeping his emotions in check?

Nairobi needs a leader who possess the agility of thought and nimbleness of mind and one with a nuanced understanding of the issues affecting the city.

SPEWING HATRED

Mike Sonko can never be accused of being ‘sharp’ or ‘intellectual’ because he lacks the aptitude for the job. A demagogue, he thinks he is the Donald Trump of Eastlands and has demonstrated his penchant for spewing hatred on television, calling people whose faces are light-skinned albino. Do not for forget either that this is the same man that insulted a female radio presenter on air.

Mike Sonko has lost his appeal and lustre just like his gold rings. He is a washed out leader with no political capital left in his bag of tricks, clinging to his party and high-ranking friends like a frustrated limpet who has refused to accept reality.

A highly controversial man with a reputation for drama, Sonko’s checkered past record should be placed next to Chapter Six of the Constitution — the part on Leadership and Integrity — as a cautionary tale of how not to be a leader.

He has an insatiable appetite for theatrics, punching walls, dyeing his hair and making unguarded statements in public. Surely, this is not the kind of leadership Nairobians are looking for.

Besides doing something about his cavalier disregard for sartorial excellence, Mike Sonko should also disabuse himself of the notion that he is special simply because almost one million Nairobians voted for him.

IMMATURITY

Things change overnight, and Sonko should know that his time is up. He should realise that Nairobians are tired of his theatrics; that they are fed up with the politics of Sonkoism. He is not funny anymore. City voters want a leader with a vision.

After a recent dramatic appearance on television where he made a laughing stock of himself, he seems to have apologised to his constituents and sought for forgiveness, blaming his threatrics on rage.

Well, Dear Sonko, apology not accepted. You deserve to be tossed out together with the other politicians who do not uphold the standards we expect.

What you are doing is neither politics nor leadership, it is immaturity. And you need to see a therapist for that anger.

Go back to your many businesses. Let leaders lead us as you see how leadership is done. Something tells me your 800,000-plus voters have shrinked considerably because you have failed to impress.

I don’t know who Nairobians will vote in as governor, but I sure hope that it is not Mike Sonko.
