The 100-day doctors’ strike ended on Tuesday after the national government, governors and the doctors’ union officials signed a deal to bring to an end the protracted industrial action.

The Health ministry, the Council of Governors and the medics’ union signed a joint return-to-work formula, effectively bringing to an end the protracted industrial action that has cost many lives.

The deal, which is good news to Kenyans, especially patients from poor backgrounds, was inked shortly after 6pm at Delta House, in Nairobi.

Council of Governors Chairman Peter Munya and officials of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union annouced an end to the strike after putting ink to paper.

The agreement was reached despite an earlier protest from the union officials after they noted changes not agreed upon had sneaked into the final document.

Council of Governors chairman Mr Peter Munya said the strike had been the most painful in the country’s history.

“This industrial dispute has been one of the most painful and hardest one in our history,” he said.

KMPDU secretary general Ouma Oluga officially called off the strike at the event.

“As we said in the beginning we say it again in the end, you can’t separate the rights of patients with doctors rights,” Dr Oluga said.
