Mombasa Island was on Monday morning brought at a standstill ahead of the relaunch of Mtongwe Ferry after detectives mounted a heavy search on vehicles and people using Nyali Bridge.
Mombasa governor Hassan Joho was briefly blocked by police at the Nyali bridge during the operation conducted by a contingent of GSU officers and flying squad.
Governor Joho was accompanied by Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba. The two were riding on motorbikes to avoid traffic jam.

The Mombasa governor is expected to address a media briefing at his office shortly accompanied with Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir and Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba among other leaders.
The officers from the Flying squad and GSU were stopping every vehicle accessing the bridge amid claims of a plot to block Governor Hassan Joho from accessing town.
Passengers, including political and business leaders, from the North Coast spent more than three hours in the jam.
