The Wiper Party is facing internal eruption with reports of fierce jostling to control the future of Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
Kalonzo, whom sources say is still furious with a local pollster after a recent opinion poll reported that ANC Leader Musalia Mudavadi is more popular than him, was this weekend holed up in Mombasa with some of his close lieutenants to plot the next move.
They addressed several poorly attended rallies, and retreated to places where political plotting is done. One of those places, sources reveal, was earshot away from President Uhuru, fueling rumors of Kalonzo’s classical comeback.
In ODM circles, some circles, tacticians are working on a 2007 scenario.
Kalonzo is said to be working on two-prong approach to August: clinch the NASA ticket or destroy NASA from within.
Already Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama, seen as now too closer to ODM Leader Raila Odinga has been ejected from Kalonzo’s inner sanctum.
Kenya Today has been informed through an impeccable source that Nyali MP Awiti Bolo who has declared interest in Mombasa seat openly told Wiper SG Hassan Omar to stop his futile bid and support him, saying Omar cannot unseat Joho. The altercation ended in a fistfight.
Omar, telling Awiti off, reminded him that he is uneducated and should ideally be finishing his form four, now that KCSE exams fee has been waived for all candidates. The altercation quickly degenerated into fist-fights as the two engaged physically.
Those who watched the two wrestle like two horny rams likened it to the fight between Mohammed Ali and George Foreman, recorded in history as “rumble in the jungle“, or the greatest boxing match of the 20th century.
Kalonzo is facing a tight balancing act in Mombasa. The wealthy Awiti, though unpopular, has been bankrolling Wiper activities across the country. Omar, on the other hand, is the public face of Wiper which is essentially an Ukambani party.
Awiti wants former ODM official Farah Maalim, now Wiper Deputy Party Leader, to be more conspicuous in Wiper circles while Kalonzo is comfortable with Omar, who is now the new link to millions of shillings the party is receiving from a group of Mombasa businessmen bankrolling all anti-Joho endeavors.
Everyone in Wiper has an overblown ego problem. No one wants to play second to anyone.
Here is the point, even within NASA, Wiper’s bloated ego is an issue. Wiper is the dark horse in NASA.
Most Wiper leaders have the attitude of George Foreman: “The stronger I’d get, the weaker they’d all get.” In fact, this is Wiper’s mantra. For Wiper, and its key leaders, the strategy is to grow their strength by weakening a key coalition partner, ODM.
Yet, a weak ODM is a sure second term for Jubilee.
If NASA collapses, history already has guesses.
