At least 6,000 vulnerable students in Thika Town constituency are set to benefit from an education scholarship programme funded by area MP Alice Ng’ang’a.

The students received bursaries worth Sh32 million under the Thika Education Trust Fund (THETFU). Speaking after disbursing cheques at Chania Boys High School, Ms Ng’ang’a said education is the best legacy a parent can bequeath to their children since it impacts generations.

Ms Ng’ang’a said that as an industrial town, Thika has several slums where families need bursary assistance. “The only way we can end this poverty cycle is by educating our children and secure a bright future for them,” she said adding that she will not give up soliciting for funds to educate the less fortunate in society.

The MP observed that the majority of leaders and successful entrepreneurs in the country were beneficiaries of bursaries and that they should work at educating the less fortunate to give back to society.

“I would like to urge fellow leaders and anyone with financial muscle to at least support needy students, to do so without tiring,” she insisted.

Education Cabinet Secretary ( CS) Fred Matiang’i who was the chief guest lauded the efforts by the Thika MP saying that he has travelled across the country and noticed that Ms Ng’ang’a is one of the best performing MPs in the education sector.

Matiang’i said that together with other education stakeholders he will work tirelessly to ensure that the country produces scholars who can effectively drive Kenya’s development agenda.

Hated and loved in equal measure , the CS has on many occasions been the target of harsh criticism. Recently, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) Secretary General Wilson Sossion threatened to petition in the National Assembly to oust Matiang’i.

MPs present at the ceremony were Moses Kuria, Kanini Kega, Jude Njomo and the host all who assured Matiang’i of their support and vowed to dismiss the petition if it reaches parliament.
