NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 15 – Kakamega High School recorded a 18-14 win over Laiser Hill Academy at the Nairobi School on Saturday to reclaim the Kenya Secondary School Sports Association (KSSA) National title for the first time since 2013.
Kakamega led 15-7 at the break through Derrick Ashiundu’s penalty and a conversion with Omuyaku Charles and Imani Kevin landing tries while Kenya U20 international Charles Tendwa scored a converted try for Laiser.
Johnnie Olindi scored and converted to bring Laiser Hill to within a point of Kakamega but an Ashiundu penalty and astute territorial tactics saw Kakamega dethrone Laiser Hill as national champions.
Elsewhere, the last leg of the Kenya Rugby Union women’s League was held on Friday at the NAC grounds with Homeboyz Ladies emerging Champions after holding on to an early 5-0 lead over the hosts Top Fry Nakuru ladies till the very end.
Northern Suburbs were the overall champions with a total of 96 points closely followed by the winners of the fifth leg Homeboyz Ladies who came second with 95 points.
Hosts Top Fry Nakuru ladies finished third overall with a total of 83 points followed by Mwamba Ladies who finished the league fourth gathering 81 points throughout the league.
Menengai Cream Homeboyz won the final round of the series in Nakuru
The bottom half of the league standings saw Standard Chartered Impala ladies in fifth place with 73 points, Shamas gathered a total of 55 points as COMRAS and The Varsity Warriors finished the league with a total of 45 and 37 points each respectively.
The most promising player in the league was Standard Chartered Impala Ladies’ Judith Auma, Northern Suburbs scooped the Top point scorer and the MVP both going to one Philadelphia Orlando as Janet Okello bagged the top try scorer award.
