Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale was on Saturday on the receiving end of an online backlash after giving a Sh20,000 handout to a samosa-selling family.

Khalwale had tweeted about his “kind act”, only to be met by a barrage of angry tweeps who called him names.

Most of those opposing the handout idea said the senator had just discouraged a young entrepreneurial family.

Others suggested that the politician had made the family dependent on handout for making them feel embarrassed for selling samosas.

Some however defended Khalwale stating that he gave the money to the boy in a bid to stop child labour.
As has been during electioneering period, politicians dish out money to citizens to appeal for their vote.
