A tweet by President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda informing his followers of a recent meeting with Belgian King, Philippe Leopold in Brussels has evoked online fury.

President Museveni is facing an increasing dissent in his country in the wake of attempts by his party to pass legislation that will extend his presidency.

Amid chaotic scenes including brutal arrests of dissenting lawmakers, the ruling NRM party has in the past week commenced steps to amend a constitutional requirement that bars the Head of State from contesting for the Presidency in the next elections set for 2021.

‘LIFE PRESIDENT’

The particular clause on age-limit sets the maximum age for anyone seeking the Presidency in the country at 75. Museveni will be 76 in four years time.

It is in the backdrop of the turbulent political climate in Uganda that President Museveni tweeted about his meeting with the Belgian monarch.

Most of those who responded to the tweet were slighted by the fact that President Museveni seems hellbent on extending his 31-year reign as head of state and perhaps anoint himself a ‘life president’.
