University of Nairobi has denied claims that a student died last week after anti-riot police invaded the institution and beat up students who had engaged in a demonstration.

The university said 27 students were injured in the incident.

Director Corporate affairs John Orindi also confirmed that one student is set to undergo an operation at Kenyatta National Hospital on Tuesday.

The students had last week held street demonstrations to push for the release of Embakasi East MP Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino.

Mr Ongili, a former student leader at the university, had been arrested for allegedly making abusive remarks at a public rally.
