The frustration of piling up graduation certificates with no formal employment to show prompted Aloyo Amateshe to think hard about the huge gap between academy and industry.
No easy answers on how to bridge the gap came his way despite years of researching and on numerous occasions he felt like giving up.
“There is this talk of half-baked graduates from our colleges and universities. Numerously, there is conversation about graduates who are not ready for the job market.
After years of fruitless job hunting, he started a website, http://ift.tt/2CjDTgx, that offers short courses that prepare graduates for real work experience.
The courses can be learnt within days depending on the convenience of the students.
“The courses are divided into different categories including soft skills, career development and entrepreneurship. Soft skills is actually the new thing in town right now because these are things not taught in formal colleges.
“This idea was borne from the fact that I have been consulting for an international examiner in the UK, it’s the largest education solutions provider in the world. They provide me with the educational and examination materials
” These materials have been written by international experts.”
For as low as Sh1, 000, graduates can download an array of courses that they want from the website.
The content in read-only format and can not be downloaded. This to protect the material from subsequent resell, he told Nairobi News.
Successful students are handed graduation certificates as soon as they finish the courses. The certificates are downloaded from the website.
Mr Aloyo is still battling with getting accreditation from the Commission of Higher Education (CHE). He says the commission does not yet acknowledge soft skill courses as independent units of learning.
In the interim, he is scouting for partnership deals with established tertiary institutions who can agree to incorporate the courses into their programmes.
