Catholic faithfuls thronged the Holy Family Basilica on Wednesday to mark Ash Wednesday, a day that marks the beginning of the Lent season.

The midday mass was led by John Cardinal Njue who urged faithfuls to observe peace and charity to their neighbors.

The message to this year’s Lent season is ‘Reconciliation for Peaceful Co-existence and National Integration’, he said.

Ash Wednesday is observed across the world by Christians to mark the beginning of the 40 days of Lent.

The Lent period culminates in Easter celebrations.

The ash, applied in the shape of a cross, is a symbol of penance, mourning and mortality.
