Deputy President William Ruto is proving to be a difficult politician to master. From a whirlwind tour in Narok, Kakamega, Kirinyaga and Uganda all in one day, to a State House Entebbe visit with regional maverick President Museveni the next day, Ruto has left not one guessing as to where his sights are.
In what is unraveling as a carefully planned agenda that was unknown to many, the Deputy President had two separate meetings with President Museveni in Entebbe in a span of two days totaling a whopping 5 hours. It caught members of his delegation unaware including some Governors that were heard murmuring in low tones of how the close Museveni and Ruto had become.
At the end of the meeting on the first day, Museveni Invited Ruto to ride with him in his ceremonial car, something that left state house operatives in Uganda perplexed as it’s an occurrence that does not happen. As if not enough, President Museveni rode with Ruto in his private military helicopter to open the Kapchorwa-Suam Road. Back home, Raila was left lamenting about his alleged stolen election on the back of Ruto’s Kakamega rally where Ruto blew the lid off his ODM pact with Raila and Musalia Mudavadi.
Ruto is clearly casting his alliances to the region, where Uganda tops the bill in terms of economic significance to Kenya. It is an open secret that Raila does not see eye to eye with Museveni and it remains to be seen what this move portends for the region and Kenya’s politics In particular.
The visit comes on the back of William Ruto’s Western Kenya visit where he chided Mudavadi and Raila for their 2007 game of musical chairs where he missed out on the PM post that Raila took instead. Overall, it is an open secret now that William Ruto is clearly the man to beat.
