A High Court judge has awarded a patient who underwent a botched brain surgery a whopping Sh44.5 million for damages.

The boy’s parents have also been awarded Sh1 million each for the hardships they have endured since the surgery.

Judge George Odunga ordered anesthetist Dr Praxedes Mandu Okutuyi and the Nairobi Hospital to pay the award to the patient.

In their court papers’, the patient’s parents argued that their son would not have suffered the damage if the hospital’s machines were in good condition during the surgery.

The patient was a Form One student at St Mary’s High School at the time of the surgery in February 2005.
