Museveni son denies torturing government critic

Uganda President Yoweri Museveni's son Muhoozi Kainerugaba has denied torturing Kwakwenza Rukirabashaija, a government critic who recently spends weeks in custody. Rukirabashaija, who's reported to have fled to exile upon his release, claimed Kainerugaba who doubles up as a senior official in the Ugandan army, twice visited him in custody at a military camp during his detention. To which Kainerugaba responded via Twitter: "I don't know who this young boy is whom they say was beaten! I never heard of him until the media started talking about him. I've never met him or talked to him and I have no desire to do so. I have just been speaking to President Paul Kagame and he says he is not in Rwanda." Rukirabashaija was arrested on charges of assaulting the President Museveni and the first family on social media and detained despite a court order ruling he be released. Upon his release, he claimed to have been repeatedly tortured at an army barracks and showed marks all over his body as a result of the experience. The incident has widely been condemned by local and foreign activists. Rukirabashaija is the second person to be arrested and charged with abusing the first family. The other is Stella Nyanzi, an activist come scholar who was jailed for 18 months, and is currently in exile in Germany. Kainerugaba, who has in the recent past been pictured in meetings with Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta and Kagame is considered among the front runners to succeed his father, 78, whose ruled the East African country for the past three and a half decades.
