Museveni’s son Muhoozi hints at contesting against the father in 2026

Uganda's President, Yoweri Museveni's son Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has stirred up succession debates vowing to contest for presidency come 2026. In a tweet, Muhoozi said, "The only way I can re-pay my great mother is by being President of Uganda! She is simply perfect! Last year, Museveni contested against Bobi Wine, born Robert Kyagulanyi. Wine, a singer cum politician, contested rallying youths to join him in 'removing a dictator.' He would even compose a song criticising the incumbent president, then participate in riots on Uganda's streets on what he termed as oppression from the army sent by President Museveni on his supporters. Though he lost, Wine sought legal redress to challenge Museveni's win but withdrew the case claiming that Uganda's supreme court judges were biased in their judgment. Museveni is the longest-serving East African president, having served for 36 years thanks to changing the Ugandan constitution. For instance, in 2005, Ugandan legislators removed the term limits allowing President Museveni to stay in office, and in 2017, the parliamentarians again voted overwhelmingly to scrap an age limit of 75 years for presidential candidates, allowing Museveni to be on the ballot for yet another time. On the other hand, Muhoozi, who runs on the controversy, visited West Nile last week on a trip meant to develop sports. However, Ugandan law bars an army official from discussing politics.
