Dagoretti South lawmaker John Kiarie has urged the youths to take advantage of the free internet installed in Nairobi to promote their businesses. Addressing the media during the launch of free Wi-Fi hotspot by ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo at City Market Nairobi, the lawmaker said the launch comes when the world is shifting to digital space. He stressed it is time the youths grab opportunities to create content and advertise their businesses. “The free Wi-Fi is a great deal, especially for content creators. It is time the youths grab the opportunity and get their content known all over the world,” said Kiarie. He specifically encouraged content creators to follow in his footsteps. “I was a content creator and I have made great steps through acting. During our time, there were no such privileges. You had to purchase bundles to air your content. This has drastically evolved and that is why I encourage the youths to do more and earn a living through the digital space,” said Kiarie. The Redykyulass show was formed in the early 2000s. The show was the brainchild of two Kenyatta University students and an administrator at the institution. At the time, Walter Mong'are and John Kiarie were studying for their first degree when they partnered with the then-junior staffer Tony Njuguna to start a comedy show, which would mimic the then Head of State, Daniel Arap Moi. The move was considered both bold and daring, as the president was not one to joke around. Youth in Nairobi have taken to content creation as an income-generating activity and especially with the advent of the streaming site YouTube.
