Wanted: DCI launch manhunt for people impersonating police spokesperson

Detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Friday, November 25, 2022, announced that they had launched a manhunt for people running fake social media accounts impersonating police spokesperson Dr. Resila Onyango. In a statement, the National Police Service further cautioned members of the public against the social media accounts which were purportedly created to show that they belong to Dr Onyango. Also read: How lone shooter stalked businessman from Nairobi to Embu, shot him five times as family watched According to the police service, Dr Onyango does not own any social media pages, both on Twitter and Facebook. “We wish to caution the public against interacting with the multiple accounts purporting to belong to the National Police Service Spokesperson and Director Corporate Communications at the National Police Service (NPS),” the statement read in part. “These existing fake accounts are maintained by unscrupulous imposters with criminal intent. We urge the public to desist interacting with the imposters, as we liaise with other agencies for appropriate action on the pages and their handlers,” the statement further read. It listed four fake Facebook accounts, all which had the image of the police spokesperson as their profile pictures. On November 7, 2022, sleuths attached to the DCI arrested three people who had been running fake social media accounts that belong to members of President William Ruto’s family. The DCI in a statement on the matter said that the impersonators had been running the social media accounts also impersonated First lady Ms Rachel Ruto amongst other senior Government officials. The DCI also warned Kenyans to be wary of various fake social media accounts that are in existence, especially on Facebook. “The DCI is cautioning members of the public to be wary of fraudsters operating pseudo social media accounts impersonating members of the first family, the Deputy President, and other senior government officials,” the statement read in part.
