A police officer is being held in custody at Machakos Police Station after he allegedly shot and seriously injured a university student. In a statement, the officer identified as Mr Michael Mulwa, allegedly shot Mr Brilliant Anusu, a student at Machakos University who was among colleagues who staged a demonstration over insecurity. “The student who is currently fighting for his life at the Machakos level 5 hospital, is suspected to have been part of a group of students that had engaged police officers in running battles for the better part of the day,” a statement by the police reads in part. According to the police, nine firearms, including five pistols, three G3 rifles and one AK-47, were seized from other officers and would be subjected to forensic ballistic analysis at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road. Also read: Kenyan woman’s love for mutura in what seemed like a perfect marriage The main aim for the ballistic tests, the police said, would be to ascertain “which firearms were misused when quelling the riotous students.” The students had planned to stage demonstrations last week but were asked to put their plans on hold to enable the police arrest a gang that had been giving the students sleepless nights. In an another incident on Friday 14 suspects of robbery with violence were arrested in connection to several incidents that have been going on within the university’s environs. On Monday, December 6, 2022, police bosses within Machakos County asked the students and their leaders to remain calm as officers deal with the situation with a promise that a police station will be built within the institution. Over the weekend another police officer identified as Mr Kevin Sila was cornered by students after he forcefully took a phone from a student. He was saved from the rowdy students by his colleagues.
