A member of the county assembly (MCA) in Nairobi has vowed to mobilise Kenyans to counter the mass action protests called by Azimio leader Raila Odinga in the capital on March 20, 2023. Anthony Karanja, the United Democoratic Alliance (UDA) allied MCA, stressed the move by Mr Odinga to organise mega protests in Nairobi was not good for businesses. He regretted the mega protests could lead to damage of business premises and possibly injuries. The MCA has thus asked peaceful Nairobians to confont any come out and confront the demonstrations. "On the side, I’d like to urge peace loving people to brace themselves to confront and deter any attempts to undermine their interests and businesses by taking action against those responsible," said Mr Karanja. He claimed Azimio leaders were using the demos to grab power through undemocratic means having lost in the August 2022 polls. The Waithaka ward MCA also urged Nairobi residents to ignore Mr Odinga's call for protests. His remarks are in line with the stand of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja who has condemned the call for protests. The Minority leader has further asked the police to protect the people and their businesses on the said date. Mr Karanja added also stressed that there will be no political union between Mr Odinga and President William Ruto. After attending a church service in Kahawa West at the weekend, the governor instead called for a working relationship between the government and the opposition leaders. Mr Odinga has called for the mass protests across the country in a bid to, in his own words, reclaim victory after he was rigged out in the August 2022 polls. Mr Odinga, who finished second to President William Ruto in the August 2022 polls as per the official data by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commoision (IEBC), has also lamented the high cost of living which he says has made life unberable to Kenyans. He has also accused President Ruto of overseeing corruption.
