Martha Karua was on Friday probably the only Jubilee-allied politician to come out in support of the Supreme Court verdict on the Presidential petition.

In a judgement read by Chief Justice David Maraga, the court found that there were irregularities and illegalities in the August 8th general election, and hence ordered a fresh election within 60 days.

As Nasa politicians and supporters rejoiced, most Jubilee politicians either chose to remain quiet or simply used words which were not in praise of the decision.

But Martha Karua had other ideas. She posted a tweet praising the move, stating that the Supreme Court had asserted the supremacy of the constitution.

“Today the Supreme Court boldly asserted the supremacy of the constitution !”

Due to her history fighting for democracy and independence of institutions, it is very understandable that she would celebrate this as one of the fruits of many years of struggle.

But as a politician, it was probably another in a long list of political miscalculations. The magnitude of her actions were quite pronounced a few tweets later, where she revealed that she will be filing a petition this week against Anne Waiguru’s win.

In the August 8th election, Waiguru beat Karua by 40,000 votes. It would expected that Karua would avoid statements that would upset the people she hopes to elect her in case of a by-election, but what do I know.

All in all, Karua still went on to re-affirm her support for President Uhuru Kenyatta.
