Cops brawl outside Kamukunji Police Station

A viral clip from CCTV footage is making rounds on social media where police officers were captured fighting right at the entrance of Kamukunji police station. In the amateur video which has been making rounds on social media, a group of officers are seen discussing one of them in plain clothes when the fight starts. They push and shove each other for a minute before they are separated by fellow uniformed colleagues who are in the vicinity. It remains unclear why the officers engaged in the fight. Nairobi News has established that several complaints have been filed against the police among them including 105 deaths, serious injuries and disappearances. In the most recent report on such cases, out of the 105 deaths, 21 of them happened inside police custody, 55 of them were as a result of police action, 15 cases were from shooting causing serious injuries, 12 on enforced disappearances and two of unlawful discharge of firearms. Also read: IEBC boss claims goons wielding crude weapons attacked them at city hotel In cases solved internally, the Internal Affairs Unit at the National Police Service (NPS) had a total of 612 complaints against the police. 18 of the cases were administrative in nature and they were all forwarded to the NPS, the office of Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai and his two deputies awaiting action. 418 cases were also referred to various police commanders across the country. In 2021, a status report on prosecutions of police brutality cases was presented to the Senate Justice and Legal Affairs Committee, Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji noted evidence tampering, intimidation of victims and witnesses and interference with investigations as the main challenges during prosecution of cases of human rights violations by police officers.
