Tanzanian singer Ommy Dimpoz has revealed how he got away with a debt of Sh3.1 million, which he incurred during the near-death surgery that left him in a coma. Sometime in April 2018, while attending Ali Kiba's wedding, Dimpoz said that was when he first noticed difficulty swallowing food. Also read: Where is he? In a past interview upon recovery, Ommy disclosed that doctors informed him his illness resulted from food poisoning. The infection had damaged his vocal cords, and there was uncertainty if he could ever make a music comeback, let alone live. Also read: Exclusive: Majirani – I was a victim of sodomy while in prison At the South African facility, he underwent a major surgery lasting 12 hours, which entailed opening up his throat to his stomach to rectify the mess. The procedure left him in a coma for nine days before regaining consciousness. He recuperated at the hospital for three months before relocating to Mombasa to continue with his rehabilitation under the watch of former Governor Ali Hassan Joho. A few weeks after being discharged, his condition deteriorated after the surgery wound became septic prompting him to be flown to Germany. While recuperating at the hospital, Ommy says former Tanzanian president Jakaya Kikwete had made a habit of checking up on him regularly, which included video calls. "One day, the president called. It was a video call, and the doctors were there and sought to know if he was my father. They have witnessed such calls before. I said yes but also told them he was the Tanzanian president. "I remember I had undergone some lung tests and screening, which cost Euro 25,000 (Sh3.1 million), which I was to pay. But because of that president's call, the head doctor ordered the bill waived," Ommy adds. The singer went on to spend 7 months recuperating before releasing his first song in February 2019 since the saga. Joho is said to have played a major part in footing the singer's bill, reportedly over Sh10 million. Last week Ommy released his first album in his career, dubbed 'Dedication,' and had a launch party that Kikwete attended as the chief guest.
