KMPDU confirms eight counties have cleared unpaid salaries to medics

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Atellah Davji has confirmed eight counties have cleared unpaid salaries to medics. Those that have not been paid include: Vihiga County, Kisumu, Bomet, and Nyamira. On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, medics in Vihiga and Nyamira had protested on the streets while demanding a sit down with their respective county governments. During today's meeting, Atellah says the doctors resolved to air their grievances against the injustices of salary delays and unfair labor practices. They also discussed how to organize their structural power by recruiting everyone on board, including doctors on contracts who continue to suffer from undignifying contracts. According to Davji Atellah, Secretary General of the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU), the message is clear: "The counties either style up or ship out!" The union plans to continue its efforts to push for fair labor practices and the timely payment of salaries for all doctors in the affected counties. The union members also travelled to Kakamega and Kericho to iron out some issues. The doctors are determined to hold the county governments accountable and ensure that doctors receive fair compensation for their work. The solidarity meeting was a strong statement from the KMPDU, and the union is committed to continuing its fight for fair labor practices and the rights of all doctors. The dialogue comes a few days after Atellah explained how delays in salary payments had put doctors in a difficult financial situation. He said doctors from various health unions were unable to meet their daily needs and were therefore unable to report to work.
