Our client, a developer, owner and operator of power plants and infrastructure across sub Saharan Africa are currently seeking to recruit an ESHS Manager to be based in their project location in Nakuru.  The successful candidate MUST have experience in a Senior Environmental Management role in construction, preferably in the power industry or large scale infrastructure, multi-faceted complex projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the Project’s environmental and social management system (ESMS), including the various management plans and other supporting documentation
  • Provide leadership, management and direction to the ESH&S team and its activities.
  • Direct and oversee multiple contractors and diverse activities during the construction phase of the Plant.
  • Advise and assist the GM and liaise with colleagues, contractors and GDC on all ESH&S matters, including the implementation of policies, procedures / plans, consultation and oversight activities.
  • Represent the company in ESHS dealings with external parties – including contractors / consultants, lenders and business partners, Government Ministries, Regulatory Bodies and other Agencies.
  • Ensure full compliance with applicable Kenyan legislation and specific permitting requirements.
  • Review and update the Project ESMS and other documentation to ensure continuing ESMS compliance with the range of international standards and guidance adopted by the Company.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of Contractors’ own ESHS systems, policies, plans, procedures and activities against Employer requirements and request clarifications.
  • Programme internal and external audits to verify the efficacy and effectiveness of the ESMS and compliance with ESIA and other licensing / permitting conditions.
  • Prepare and submit periodic activity reports to the General Manager and quarterly / annual monitoring reports to the Lenders.

Qualifications: 

  • Must have a relevant Degree in environmental management, science, sustainability or related discipline.
  • Must have 10 years´ successful experience in a senior environmental management role in construction, preferably in the power industry or large scale infrastructure, multi-faceted complex projects.
  • Must have Technical knowledge of Kenyan environmental legislation, environmental and social impact assessment, construction environmental mitigations methods, community engagement and outreach programmes and ISO 14001/OHSAS 18001 management systems.
  • Must have working understanding of Development Finance Institutions (DFI’s)/ lenders’ due diligence audits and the AFDB standards applicable to the Project.
  • Must have technical knowledge of methods and techniques for successful management of ESHS issues relevant to Project implementation, mitigation plans and compliance outcomes.
  • People management – delegating responsibilities and accountabilities, managing performance, motivating staff, creating open communications
  • Programme management – programming and planning, resource allocation, financial management; contractual acumen.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent communications, negotiation, problem-solving and conflict management skills in dealings with all levels of management, internally and externally.
